BMX Bikes
A BMX bike today, although similar in appearance, is quite
different than they were 30 years ago. The original BMX bikes were not
necessarily designed for the rigors of a BMX race, but these early bikes
paved the way for the more purposeful bikes of today. Many bicycle companies
improved their designs through consultations with these early BMX riders.
The modified Schwinn Stingrays of the 1970’s were the prototypes
for today’s BMX bikes. The compact size and ubiquitous availability
of these bikes made them the ideal choice for early riders. These bikes
were also easily altered to improve their handling and performance to
optimize their off-road capabilities.
Today, nearly every bicycle manufacturer has a line of BMX bikes.
These modern bikes have many features that were not available to the
early pioneers of the sport. Chromoly frames, alloy wheels, and a several
other advances have made these bikes much lighter and tougher than their
ancestors.
